VW Transporter: Bigger, Bolder, and Brimming with Tech
The Volkswagen Transporter, a stalwart of South African roads, is about to enter a new era. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled the seventh-generation Transporter, set to launch in the second half of 2025, and it's clear this isn't just a facelift – it's a complete reimagining. This new model promises more space, increased payload, enhanced tech, and a focus on sustainable mobility.
One of the most significant changes is the sheer size. The Transporter has grown, with both short and long wheelbase options available, resulting in a noticeable increase in cargo space. The long wheelbase panel van now boasts a cavernous 6.8m³ of load volume, enough for three Euro pallets. Payload has also been bumped up to 1.33 tonnes, and towing capacity now peaks at a hefty 2.8 tonnes (depending on the model). These increases speak directly to the needs of South African businesses and tradespeople.
The exterior design represents a clear evolution. While hints of previous generations are visible, the new Transporter sports a modern and distinctive look. Striking LED headlights, a prominent grille, and clean lines contribute to a purposeful aesthetic. Inside, the cabin is dominated by a 12-inch Digital Cockpit and a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system, complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This tech-forward approach is a welcome addition, bringing the Transporter into the modern age.
Convenience is also a key theme. The electronic parking brake with Auto Hold function frees up space in the cabin, and the automatic gearbox selector has moved to the steering column. Practical storage solutions abound, ensuring everything has its place. Standard features now include rain sensors, Lane Assist, Front Assist, and dynamic road sign display, elevating the Transporter's safety credentials.
Under the hood, three new 2.0-litre TDI engines will be available, offering 81kW, 110kW, and 125kW. The most powerful engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and available with optional 4MOTION all-wheel drive. While specific fuel consumption figures are yet to be released, Volkswagen emphasizes the engines' efficiency and focus on sustainable mobility.
The new Transporter will be available in Panel Van, Crew Bus, Kombi, and Dropside Double Cab derivatives. While the first three are slated for a 2025 launch, the Dropside Double Cab will arrive in 2026. This comprehensive lineup caters to a wide range of needs, from commercial transport to passenger-carrying duties.
The new Volkswagen Transporter isn't just an update; it feels like a proper evolution. They've clearly listened to what people actually need from a van – more space, smarter tech, and something that can handle a proper workload. It's not just bigger; it's better in a way that feels tangible. From the increased payload to the slick infotainment system, this Transporter seems genuinely useful.
Honestly, it looks like Volkswagen has built a van that's not just practical, but actually something you'd want to drive.
