New Volkswagen Golf 8.5 Arrives in South Africa, But GTI Fans Disappointed
Volkswagen South Africa has announced the arrival of the updated Golf 8.5, set to hit showrooms in the first quarter of 2025.
While the refreshed model brings updated styling, enhanced technology, and a range of trim levels, local enthusiasts will be disappointed to learn that the highly anticipated Golf GTI 8.5 is not slated for release in the South African market.
Instead, South Africa receives an entry-level Golf 8.5, powered by a 1.4-litre TSI engine producing 110kW and 250Nm of torque. Mated to an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission, this powertrain offers a balance of performance and efficiency, appealing to a broader customer base. While not the fire-breathing GTI, the 1.4 TSI offers respectable performance for everyday driving.
The Golf 8.5 showcases a redesigned front fascia, featuring a now-illuminated Volkswagen logo and sleeker LED headlights. The top-tier IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights boast an impressive 500m high-beam range. The rear also receives subtle styling tweaks, completing the refreshed look.
Volkswagen is offering the Golf 8.5 in four distinct trim levels: Life, Life+, R-Line, and R-Line+. The base Life model includes features like Eco LED headlights, Wireless App Connect, and a 12.9-inch infotainment system with a 10-inch digital cockpit. Stepping up to the Life+ adds Driver Profile Selection, a rearview camera, and ambient lighting.
For a sportier aesthetic, the R-Line trim introduces a heated multi-function steering wheel with shift paddles, sports suspension, and 17-inch Coventry alloy wheels. The range-topping R-Line+ boasts IQ.Matrix LED headlights, Vienna leather seats, and 18-inch Leeds alloy wheels. It also adds comfort features like heated and cooled front seats.
