The Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI specifications finally get revealed

South Africans can expect the highly anticipated Volkswagens Golf 8 GTI to hit our local market in the second quarter of this year. The seventh-generation Golf GTI has already sold 14 252 units in SA alone, making us one of the biggest Golf GTI markets outside of Europe. It seems that locals can never get enough of the Golf GTI nameplate, and after hearing its eight-generation specifications, we are likely to see petrol heads flocking to Volkswagen dealerships to get a piece of this hot hatch.

In terms of power, the Golf 8 GTI will be 11kW more powerful than its predecessor. It will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine and will produce an impressive 180kW and 370 Nm of torque. As expected, it will get paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and can blitz from 0-100km/h in just 6.4 seconds.

As it stands, the Golf 8 GTI will come equipped with 18-inch Richmond alloy wheels, a Lights and Vision Package that will include high-beam control light assist, Climatronic air conditioning, heated leather-wrapped multi-function sports steering wheel with touch control and shifting paddles, GTI Vienna leather seats, keyless locking and starting system, Composition Media Radio, multi-colour InnoVision Cockpit, App-Connect, Cruise Control, Park Distance Control and a mobile phone interface with a charging function as well as an ambient lighting packing that offers 30 unique colours.

Volkswagen has made a range of optional features available to ranging from a panoramic sunroof, mechanically swiveling trailer hitch, and LED Matrix Headlights. Black Styling Package with black 18-inch Bergamo alloy wheels, Head-up Display, Adaptive chassis control including driving profile selection, smokers package, 19-inch Adelaide alloy wheels, Harmon Kardon sound system, Discover Pro Radio (Satellite Navigation, USB, Wireless App-Connect and Voice Control), Park Assist (parallel parking assistant), Rear Assist with a rearview camera, Blind spot monitor (Rear Traffic Alert and Lane Assist including Electronically Folding Mirrors), Travel Assist (Lane Assist with Adaptive Cruise Control) and Adaptive cruise control with Front Assist and Autonomous Emergency Braking.

The Golf 8 GTI will come available in a range of exterior colours. This includes three solid paint colours - Pure White, Urano Grey, and Moonstone Grey. As well as four metallic colours - Dolphin Grey, Atlantic Blue, Kings Red, and Reflex Silver, and two pearlescent colours - Deep Black Pearl and Oryx White Pearl.

Volkswagen has yet to unveil the pricing for the Golf 8 GTI. The current Golf 7 GTI retails at R689 200, so we can only assume that its price tag will sit slightly above this. Whether this figure is accurate or not, we will have to wait till later this year to find out.
