Chery's 2024 Global NEV Rollout
Chery is gearing up to launch an extensive lineup of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in 2024, emphasising their commitment to hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric, and other NEV models in international markets. As China's leading vehicle exporter, Chery has surpassed market expectations in South Africa for two years. Tony Liu, Deputy Executive General Manager of Chery South Africa, highlights their strategy of aggressive competition through superior specifications, warranties, and value-added products, enabling them to expand market segments and outperform rivals.
In South Africa, the NEV market remains small compared to traditional internal combustion engines. Still, Chery has experienced substantial growth in China's NEV sector, particularly with its Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro PHEVs. November sales reached a record 212,076 vehicles, a 111% increase from the previous year, contributing to a 47.8% annual increase in total sales, including PHEV and EV models.
Chery's PHEV models feature a proprietary hybrid system rigorously tested for over five million kilometres and 30,000 hours. This dual electric motor system and a turbo-petrol engine offer various modes for different driving scenarios, like city and long-distance journeys. The system incorporates a kinetic energy regeneration system (KERS) for recharging and provides a substantial electric-only range. Liu notes that the extensive testing allows for tailored driving modes, ensuring optimal performance and fuel efficiency.
The new PHEV Tiggo models, expected to debut in South Africa, boast a range of nearly 1,000 kilometres, showcasing Chery's innovation and engineering prowess in the evolving NEV market.
