This is it! The new Suzuki Jimny.

Revealed on the automaker’s website prior to its official unveiling early next month, the fourth-generation of the miniscule yet highly competent off-roader comes to replace a model that has been around for 20 years.

According to these images, there are two variants - the Jimny and the Jimny Sierra. The Sierra is the more upmarket derivative of the two, with the most prominent difference being the plastic body cladding around the wheel arches as well as a contrasting roof. Other minor differences are a bumper on the Sierra with larger skidplates.

The front grille - on both models - is also more upright than the previous generations and has a five-slat design. Other noticeable changes over its predecessor are the round projector headlamps, LED tail-lights, and LED DRL. Both variants get bumpers which allow for good approach / departure angles, as well as a tailgate-mounted spare wheel in typical Jimny fashion.

While its exterior retains its retro looks, there is a twist of modernity on the interior. It’s like to feature some of the latest tech we have seen on cars like the Ignis, Baleno and new Swift. So expect auto climate control, automatic lights and windscreen wipers, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with compatibility with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, among others.

A ladder frame configuration and the three-link rigid suspension no doubt combine to once again give it impressive off-road abilities. There is also said to be part-time 4WD with a low-range transfer gear as standard, whilst engine options - specifically for the Japanese domestic market - include a turbocharged 660cc inline-three and a 1.5-litre unit.

The Jimny is expected to go on sale in Japan before the end of 2018, before reaching other markets in early 2019. Suzuki South Africa has said that further details about the local introduction will be revealed at the Jimny's official launch on the 5th July.
