Mercedes-Benz GLB 220d: Spacious, Stylish, and Surprisingly Frugal⁣

The Mercedes-Benz GLB 220d is a compact SUV that slots neatly between the GLA and GLC, making it an appealing entry point into the Mercedes SUV family. ⁣

With a starting price of R 1,187,299, it's certainly a significant investment, but does it offer enough to be crowned the perfect family car?⁣

From the outside, the GLB 220d is undeniably handsome. Its boxy design hints at the spaciousness within, while still retaining that distinct Mercedes-Benz elegance. The LED high-performance headlights with adaptive high beam assist come standard, and the chrome detailing on the front grille adds a touch of class. Our test car was fitted with optional 19-inch two-tone wheels (a R42,000 upgrade), which, while stylish, might compromise ride comfort compared to the standard 18-inch setup.⁣

Under the bonnet lies a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine mated to an 8G-DCT gearbox, producing a healthy 140 kW and a substantial 400 Nm of torque. This translates to a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 227 km/h. More importantly, the engine delivers smooth and effortless performance, making overtaking a breeze and highway cruising a relaxed affair. Fuel economy is impressive too, with the GLB 220d achieving around 6.0 L/100km on the open road.⁣

Step inside, and you're greeted by a truly premium interior. The dual-screen setup, incorporating the latest MBUX infotainment system, is a highlight. It's intuitive, responsive, and packed with features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems. The cabin is spacious, with ample legroom and headroom for both front and rear passengers. Rear passengers also benefit from dedicated air vents, USB-C ports, and a panoramic sunroof. The boot offers a generous 570 litres of space, expandable to 1,755 litres with the rear seats folded down, making it perfect for family adventures and long trips.⁣

On the road, the GLB 220d impresses with its refined ride and confident handling. The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system provides excellent traction, even on gravel roads, and the off-road mode adds further capability for light off-road excursions. The steering is precise and well-weighted, and the haptic touch controls on the steering wheel, while taking some getting used to, offer a futuristic touch.⁣

However, no car is perfect. The ride can be a bit firm, especially with the optional 19-inch wheels. Some interior plastics, particularly on the doors, feel a tad below par for a car in this price range. And while the GLB offers plenty of space for passengers and luggage, it's only available as a five-seater, unlike some competitors that offer a seven-seat option.⁣

Speaking of competitors, the GLB 220d faces stiff competition from the likes of the BMW X1 and the Volvo XC40. While these rivals offer their own unique strengths, the GLB counters with its spaciousness, refined driving experience, and that undeniable Mercedes-Benz prestige.⁣

The GLB 220d comes standard with a 5-year/100,000km maintenance plan, providing peace of mind for owners.⁣

In conclusion, the Mercedes-Benz GLB 220d is a compelling package that ticks many boxes for a family car. It's stylish, spacious, practical, and offers a premium driving experience. While not without its minor flaws, it's a strong contender in the compact SUV segment and a worthy consideration for those seeking a luxurious and versatile family vehicle.
