Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the CLE Cabriolet, a new model that effectively replaces both the C-Class and E-Class convertibles in their lineup.
This strategic move streamlines their offerings while introducing a fresh contender to the competitive luxury convertible segment.
The CLE Cabriolet draws inspiration from the recently launched CLE Coupé, but with its own distinct character. The classic fabric soft top, available in black, red, or grey, contributes to a timeless aesthetic while offering impressive acoustic insulation for a refined open-air experience.
Under the hood, South African buyers will have a choice of two 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines. The CLE 200 delivers 150 kW and 320 Nm of torque, while the CLE 300 4MATIC offers 190 kW and 400 Nm, complemented by Mercedes' 48-volt mild hybrid system for enhanced efficiency.
Stepping inside, the CLE Cabriolet presents a luxurious and technologically advanced cabin. The driver is greeted by a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and an 11.9-inch central touchscreen, angled to minimize glare when the top is down. Mercedes' latest MBUX infotainment system promises seamless connectivity and personalization.
Comfort and convenience features abound, including the AIRCAP electric wind deflector and AIRSCARF neck-level heating system, ensuring comfortable open-top driving even in cooler conditions. The CLE Cabriolet also boasts generous space for four occupants, with increased rear legroom and shoulder room compared to its predecessor, the C-Class Cabriolet.
Pricing for the CLE 200 starts at R1,515,350, while the CLE 300 4MATIC commands a premium at R1,573,651. Both models include a comprehensive 5-year/100,000 km service and maintenance plan.
The CLE Cabriolet enters a market segment occupied by established rivals such as the BMW 4 Series Convertible and the now defunct Audi A5 Cabriolet. Whether it can successfully capture the hearts (and wallets) of South African buyers remains to be seen.
A full road test will undoubtedly reveal if this new convertible lives up to its promise of open-top driving pleasure and Mercedes-Benz's reputation for luxury and refinement.
