Back in 2015, with the all-new biturbo C63 on its way, Mercedes-Benz South Africa needed a way to give a fitting farewell to its legendary all-motor C63 AMG.

And after seeing that South Africa was one of their largest markets for their hotted-up AMG models, Mercedes-AMG decided to produce a model that was specific to our market – and to our tastes. This was the Mercedes Benz C63 AMG Coupe Legacy Edition “507”, and only 10 units of this exceptionally-rare sports coupe were ever produced only for South Africa, making this one of the rarest Mercedes AMG models to ever be released. Even rarer than cars like the Hennessey Venom GT or Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR or even the Koenigsegg Regera!

Under the skin, it shared many mechanicals with the “Edition 507”, most notably its brilliant 6.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8. The AMG-built M156 motor sent 373kw and 610 of tyre-shredding newtons to the rear wheels via an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. Unlike the “Edition 507” where the LSD was an option, the Legacy gained it as standard equipment. Other niceties in terms of performance were the standard AMG high-performance composite brake system, as well as the AMG Driver’s package that saw top speed increased to an electronically-limited speed of 280kph. Needless to say, the brawny C63 had to guts to go way past that if ungoverned.

But while the distinctive roar of the AMG V8 was signature enough for the C63, AMG’s Performance Studio decided to push the envelope even further and painted the coupe in an exclusive color called Viper Green Magno – which was made specifically for the Legacy Edition. Complementing the in-your-face paintwork is a large carbon-fibre rear wing, forged 19” alloys that also received the Viper Green treatment and a lightweight hood off the Mercedes Benz C63 AMG Black Series (although this was standard fitment on the 507).

The interior was adorned with AMG’s carbon-fibre package, and included a numbered plaque showcasing its uniqueness. If you want to know what a European muscle car would look like, then this would have been your answer. But this beast was high-tech too, with adjustable suspension, a perfectly balanced steering, a fully customizable drive, as well as a very advanced suspension along with smart LSD. It was a proper hooligan machine, almost unlike anything else AMG has produced since.

When it launched in 2015, it sold with an asking price of R1 508 800, and back then, only two were made available to KZN. What’s important to note is that this car, is already a collector’s item, being the very last naturally-aspirated AMG model to be produced, and that makes it a proper unicorn!
