German luxury car maker Mercedes-AMG has unveiled their latest model, the GT63 SE Performance. Utilising an electric motor (and the legendary 4.0-litre V8), the electrified 63 promises some potent performance figures.

With 620 kW and 1400 Nm of torque on tap, the big Benz can hit 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds, 200 km/h in 10 seconds and reach a 316 km/h top speed. The power is sent to all four wheels via the 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system. Together with the V8, a “permanently excited synchronous electric motor” provides the stonking performance.

Good for 150 kW, the electric motor is housed at the rear axle. With a capacity of 6.1 kWh, there’s 70 kW of continuous output, while 150 kW is available for 10 seconds. Like a full electric vehicle, the battery can be charged - giving an electric range of 12 km.

Aside from the wizardry taking place under the bonnet, very few changes have been made to the exterior. Aside from some “V8 BiTurbo E Performance” badging on the front fender, not much differentiates the new model from the others in the range.

Should You Buy It?

The Mercedes-AMG GT63 SE Performance is an absolute weapon that'll make your neighbours question their life choices, but at an expected R3.2 million, it's strictly for those who measure success in triple-digit speeds. If you're shopping in this rarified air and want the most powerful four-door AMG ever built, this is your chariot. However, the regular GT63 4-Door at around R2.8 million delivers 90% of the drama for considerably less cash. Unless you absolutely must have the bragging rights of 620 kW and that 2.9-second sprint time, save yourself R400,000 and go with the standard model. For most buyers, even wealthy ones, the GT63 SE Performance is overkill that you'll never fully exploit on South African roads.
