ISUZU Motors South Africa has unveiled a new addition to its mu-X seven-seater SUV lineup: the 1.9 LS 4x2 AT. This value-driven version expands the local offering to six mu-X models, the most extensive range the company has offered to date.

Kevin Fouche, Department Executive: Product Planning and Programme Management at ISUZU Motors South Africa, states, “The introduction of the new entry-level 1.9-litre model broadens the mu-X's market appeal. It caters to customers seeking the space, comfort, and versatility of our renowned SUV, but with an emphasis on affordability and reduced operational costs.”

“This marks the debut of the mu-X with the 1.9-litre Ddi engine at this price range. The growing SUV segment makes this introduction timely," added Fouche. "Its competitive pricing is aimed at customers transitioning from sedans, hatchbacks, or bakkies, and the fuel efficiency of the 1.9-litre engine is anticipated to be a significant attraction.”

The new 1.9 LS mu-X is powered by ISUZU’s 1,899 cc four-cylinder intercooled turbodiesel engine, similar to what's used in the D-MAX bakkie range. This engine is known for its robust performance, impressive fuel economy, and reliability. It employs a high-pressure common rail direct injection system and a high-efficiency variable geometry turbocharger, delivering a power output of 110 kW at 3,600 r/min, and a torque of 350 Nm between 1,800 to 2,600 r/min.

The vehicle is equipped with Isuzu’s latest six-speed automatic transmission, ensuring a smooth drive. Additionally, it includes a standard rear differential lock to enhance traction on challenging terrains.

Design Highlights

The 1.9 LS mu-X incorporates the latest design enhancements introduced for 2023, featuring privacy glass for the rear windows, a new Norwegian Blue colour option, and Magnetite finishes for multiple exterior components. The range incorporates modern LED lighting for improved visibility and aesthetics. The design is complemented by 18-inch alloy wheels and a full-size alloy spare wheel. The interior is spacious, with Magnetite accents and standard leather trim, elevating the overall ambience. The seating offers advanced adjustability features for enhanced comfort.

Safety and Convenience

Despite being the entry point into the mu-X range, the 1.9 LS doesn't skimp on safety or convenience. Parking is simplified with front and rear sensors, paired with a rear view camera. Comprehensive safety features include Electronic Stability Control, ABS brakes with advanced systems, Hill Start and Descent Controls, Trailer Sway Control, and Cruise Control. Airbags are abundantly placed for protection during collisions, while security features like central locking and immobiliser ensure peace of mind.

For infotainment, a seven-inch touchscreen with integrated Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Wi-Fi, and USB charging ports offers convenience for modern users.

FAQ

Q: What does the new ISUZU mu-X 1.9 LS cost in South Africa?

The new ISUZU mu-X 1.9 LS 4x2 AT is positioned as the most affordable variant in the mu-X range, though ISUZU Motors South Africa hasn't released official pricing yet. Expect it to undercut the existing mu-X models significantly to attract buyers moving up from sedans and hatchbacks.

Q: Is the ISUZU mu-X 1.9 LS worth buying over other 7-seater SUVs?

The mu-X 1.9 LS offers compelling value with its proven 110 kW turbodiesel engine, six-speed automatic transmission, and seven seats. It's particularly attractive if you want ISUZU's legendary reliability without paying premium prices for the bigger 3.0-litre variants.

Q: How fuel efficient is the ISUZU mu-X 1.9 LS engine?

The 1.9-litre Ddi turbodiesel engine is the same unit used in the D-MAX bakkie, known for excellent fuel economy. While official consumption figures aren't available yet, expect around 7-8 litres per 100km in mixed driving conditions.

Q: What's the difference between the mu-X 1.9 LS and other mu-X variants?

The 1.9 LS uses a smaller, more economical engine producing 110 kW and 350 Nm compared to the 3.0-litre variants with 140 kW. It's rear-wheel drive only, comes with 18-inch alloys, LED lights, and privacy glass, but misses some premium features of higher-spec models.

Q: Does the ISUZU mu-X 1.9 LS have 4x4 capability?

No, the mu-X 1.9 LS is strictly a 4x2 rear-wheel drive model. However, it does include a rear differential lock as standard equipment to help with traction on slippery or uneven surfaces.

Should You Buy It?

Yes, the ISUZU mu-X 1.9 LS looks like a smart buy if you need seven seats without breaking the bank. This entry-level variant brings ISUZU's bulletproof reliability, decent performance from the 110 kW turbodiesel, and practical features like LED lights and privacy glass. The 1.9-litre engine has proven itself in thousands of D-MAX bakkies, so you're getting tried-and-tested technology. While we're waiting for official pricing, expect it to significantly undercut competitors like the Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD-6 4x2 AT that costs around R620,000. If ISUZU prices this aggressively around R550,000-R580,000, it could be the best value seven-seater SUV in South Africa right now.
