Mustang Dark Horse: Ford Unleashes a Track-Ready Thoroughbred
The iconic Ford Mustang has galloped into a new era of performance with the introduction of the Dark Horse, a track-focused variant that elevates the seventh-generation model to unprecedented heights.
This isn't just a sticker pack and a fancy name; Ford has engineered a serious machine that promises to redefine what a Mustang can be. At the heart of the Dark Horse beats a specially tuned 5.0-litre Coyote V8 engine, borrowed from the Mustang GT but with significant enhancements.
Forged connecting rods from the mighty Shelby GT500, a dual throttle-body intake, and unique camshafts contribute to a power output of 334kW and 540Nm of torque. That's a 6kW bump over the standard Mustang GT, and enough to propel the Dark Horse into the realm of serious performance cars.
Ford hasn't just thrown in a more powerful engine and called it a day. The Dark Horse boasts a host of performance upgrades aimed at conquering the track.
To ensure the engine can handle the increased performance demands, Ford has equipped the Dark Horse with an auxiliary engine oil cooler, a rear axle cooler, and a lighter, more efficient radiator with uprated cooling fans. The chassis also receives attention with unique tuning, larger rear sway bars, and heavy-duty front shocks for improved handling and stability.
Bringing the Dark Horse to a halt are powerful Brembo brakes, featuring six-piston calipers with 390mm ventilated discs up front and four-piston calipers with 355mm discs at the rear.
Ensuring that all this power effectively reaches the tarmac, Ford has equipped the Dark Horse with a Torsen limited-slip differential and high-performance Pirelli P ZERO tyres (255/40 R19 front, 275/40 R19 rear) for maximum traction and grip.
Further enhancing handling prowess, the Dark Horse comes standard with MagneRide® shocks, which constantly adapt to the road surface, optimizing both handling and ride comfort.
The Dark Horse's interior is a driver-focused haven with a digital cockpit that wouldn't look out of place in a fighter jet.
A 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen provide a wealth of information and customization options, including various drive modes (Normal, Sport, Slippery, Drag, Track, and a customizable setting). A suede-wrapped, flat-bottomed steering wheel with blue accent stitching and anodized silver paddle shifters adds to the sporty ambience.
Visually, the Dark Horse distinguishes itself from the standard Mustang with a darkened gloss black grille featuring trapezoidal nostrils, a fixed rear wing, a race-inspired diffuser, and darkened quad exhaust tips. Exclusive Dark Horse badging and a dark anodized version of the iconic pony emblem further set it apart.
The Mustang Dark Horse is priced at R1,500,000 in South Africa, which includes a 6-year/90,000km service plan, a 4-year/120,000km warranty, 4 years of roadside assistance, and a 5-year corrosion warranty.
With its potent V8 engine, track-focused upgrades, and aggressive styling, the Mustang Dark Horse is a serious contender in the performance car arena. It's a Mustang that's not only capable of turning heads but also of lapping a racetrack with confidence.
Whether it can truly outpace its German rivals like the BMW M440i remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the Dark Horse is a force to be reckoned with.
