Beyond the White Van: Transit Custom Sport Redefines Commercial Style
Ford South Africa has injected a dose of dynamism into the commercial vehicle segment with the introduction of the Transit Custom Sport.
This short-wheelbase variant elevates the Transit Custom range, already a stalwart in the European market, offering a blend of practicality and premium features aimed at discerning owner-operators and lifestyle enthusiasts.
The Sport stands out with its aggressive styling, featuring a distinctive honeycomb grille, a sporty body kit, a rear spoiler, and 17-inch matte black alloy wheels. Racing stripes and side decals further emphasise its unique character, differentiating it from the standard Transit Custom. The bold front end, highlighted by advanced LED headlights and daytime running lights, contributes to its commanding presence.
Inside, the Transit Custom Sport boasts a sophisticated cabin with sport trim and blue accents, complemented by piano black finishes. The driver enjoys a 6-way power-adjustable seat with lumbar support, while both front seats offer heating and dual armrests. A 13-inch touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC 4 system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster enhance the driving experience. Practicality is paramount, with ample storage, USB-A and USB-C ports, and an optional tilting steering wheel that transforms into a table.
The Transit Custom Sport's spaciousness is a key selling point. Its short-wheelbase configuration offers a 5.8m³ load volume and a payload of 1,023kg, accommodating up to three Euro pallets. Access is facilitated by 180-degree opening rear barn doors and dual sliding side doors.
Under the hood, an updated 2.0-litre Single Turbo EcoBlue diesel engine delivers 125kW and 390Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle features selectable drive modes, including a dedicated Sport mode, ensuring adaptable performance.
Safety is a priority, with a comprehensive suite of driver-assist technologies, including adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and autonomous emergency braking. Six airbags and front and rear parking sensors with a 180-degree rear camera enhance safety and convenience.
In South Africa, the Transit Custom Sport enters a competitive market, facing rivals like the Mercedes-Benz Vito and Volkswagen Transporter. However, Ford’s focus on luxury, technology, and distinctive styling positions it as a unique offering.
Priced at R 938,000, the Transit Custom Sport includes a 6-year/90,000km service plan, a 4-year/120,000km warranty, 4-year/unlimited distance roadside assistance, and a 5-year/unlimited distance corrosion warranty. Extended service and warranty options are also available. The recommended service interval is 15,000km or annually.
The Ford Transit Custom Sport represents a compelling proposition for those seeking a versatile and luxurious commercial vehicle, blending practicality with a touch of sportiness.
