Credited as starting the premium hatchback segment, Audi’s much-loved classy compact, the A3, has been unveiled as an all new model. The fourth-generation builds on the classy, minimalist styling of its predecessor, with sporty details peppered across the bodywork.

Available as both a Sportback and Sedan, the new A3 will be available in a number of trim levels. First up is the ‘Standard’ model, which received 16-inch alloy wheels and black detailing around the radiator grille. A step above, the ‘Advanced’ model receives slightly bigger alloys (17-inch as standard), chrome exterior trim and distinctive bumpers, front and rear. Sitting at the summit is the S line trim, which includes a host of sporty styling add-ons. Aside from that, S line models also receive sportier suspension and S line badging (along with a rear spoiler for the Sportback models.) Matrix LED headlamps are an option on the new A3.

The strikingly chic interior borrows the classy wedge door handles from other Ingolstadt offerings, while a new gear lever lends the cabin a touch of individuality. Carbon fibre or aluminium inlays gives buyers further choice to personalise their A3’s. A 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard, as too is a digital instrument cluster - although a 12.3-inch, optional Audi virtual cockpit plus is also available, with added functions and features.

On the safety front, Audi’s 1 Series rival was given a five-star rating by EuroNCAP, and is offered with a number of optional safety features, including lane departure warning and cross traffic assist.

Under the bonnet of the new A3 sits any number of engine options. Currently, just two powertrains are available - the 35 TFSI with 110 kw, mated to an 8-speed auto and the 40 TFSI (available in November 2021) with 140 kW and a 7-speed S tronic transmission. The performance S3 derivative offers up 213 kW and 400 Nm of torque, fed through a sporty 7-speed S tronic ‘box to all four-wheels.

Expect the range-topping RS3 (with 294 kW/500 Nm) to reach South African shores in 2022.

The new Audi A3 starts from around R545,000 for the base 35 TFSI Sportback, while the sedan kicks off at approximately R565,000, and the range-topping S3 will set you back around R895,000 when it arrives.

Q: Is the new Audi A3 worth buying over the BMW 1 Series?

The A3 offers a more refined interior with that gorgeous 10.1-inch touchscreen and premium build quality, plus it comes as both a sedan and Sportback, giving you more variety than BMW's hatch-only approach.

Q: What engine options are available in the new Audi A3?

You get two main options: the 35 TFSI with 110 kW paired to an 8-speed auto, and the more potent 40 TFSI pumping out 140 kW with a 7-speed S tronic, while the S3 beast delivers 213 kW and 400 Nm through quattro all-wheel drive.

Q: Which Audi A3 trim level should I choose?

The Advanced trim hits the sweet spot with 17-inch alloys and chrome detailing, but if you want the full sporty experience, the S line adds aggressive styling, sport suspension, and that rear spoiler on Sportback models.

Q: Does the new Audi A3 have good safety features?

Absolutely, it scored a full five-star EuroNCAP rating and comes with optional goodies like lane departure warning and cross traffic assist to keep you out of trouble on our crazy SA roads.

Should You Buy It?

The best premium compact under R600,000 in SA is definitely the new Audi A3 35 TFSI Advanced at around R575,000. It strikes the perfect balance between luxury, practicality, and that premium badge appeal without breaking the bank completely. The interior quality trumps most rivals, the 110 kW engine provides adequate punch for daily driving, and you get both Sportback and sedan options to suit your style. If you've got deeper pockets and want proper performance, stretch to the S3 at R895,000, but for most buyers, the Advanced trim delivers everything you need in a classy, well-built package that'll make your neighbours properly jealous.
