Mitsubishi Triton Xtreme Double-Cab 4X4
Xtreme package boasts a host of interior upgrades, including Android Auto / Car Play
When we tested Mitsubishi’s latest Triton earlier this year, we were impressed by its good looks, build quality, performance, and refinement over its predecessor. And while the thoroughly refreshed Triton isn’t an all-new model, it is important to remember that Mitsubishi sought to make sure it was an improvement over the model it replaced in every area imaginable.
And now, Mitsubishi has decided to give the new Triton some added street-cred in the form of a limited edition model called the Triton Xtreme. The extensively updated variant is claimed to feature upgrades that would have typically added around R100 000 to the Triton’s asking price. However, Mitsubishi has crunched some numbers, so the actual damage is only an extra R40 000 over the price of the Triton Double-Cab 4x4 – the only model eligible for the Xtreme treatment.
Regarding the new Triton Xtreme, Mitsubishi Motors SA GM, Nic Campbell was quoted as saying, “For South African people a bakkie such as the complete Triton range is more than simply a practical vehicle - for many it is a status symbol that makes them stand out. We are launching the Triton Xtreme for owners with an extreme lifestyle at only a small premium over the existing 4x4 Auto flagship."
The Triton Xtreme is instantly recognizable compared to the regular Triton and gets a distinctive new black bumper and grill combo as well as a bonnet protector and headlight covers. Other exterior additions include Xtreme branding, 4x4 stickers, door handle cups to protect the paint against nail scratches, black roof rack supports for adventure lifestyle gear such as surfboards, window visors, and taillight covers. A bold-looking Kekosport style bar in black is mounted behind the cab and offers outstanding looks as well as additional protection. The Xtreme model also gets special black A-Line Hazard alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion all-terrain tyres, fender flare wheel arch extensions with visible bolts, and a Bosal tow bar.
On the inside, there is a Sport automatic shift knob and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with extra features to mirror your smart device. Out of view, but equally practical, the Triton Xtreme also boasts new "Ezydown" hydraulic dampers allowing the tailgate to open at a whisper. The bin is now rubberized; a tonneau cover is standard, while an additional tailgate locking feature helps to safeguard the contents.
This adventure-styled Xtreme draws propulsion from a refined and super-responsive 2.4-litre MIVEC VGT turbo diesel engine coupled exclusively with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The powerplant produces an unchanged 133kw and 430nm, which is sent to all four wheels through Mitsubishi's unique Super Select II 4WD system with electronic off-road assistance.
The Triton Xtreme is billed as having been developed for buyers with an “extreme lifestyle”, and is claimed to back that up with fantastic off-road abilities. For starters, it boasts a 28-degree approach angle, a 23-degree departure angle, and a 25-degree breakover angle, allowing it to conquer almost any terrain. Ground clearance is still an impressive 220mm, and it can tow a maximum of 3.1 tons.
Much like other models in the Triton line-up, the Xtreme features standard off-road tech that includes ABS with EBD, Brake Assist (BA), Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC); as well as Super Select II 4WD system with Hill-start Assist (HSA), an Electronic Off-Road Assistance utilizing Hill Descent Control for additional safety off the road.
As with other Tritons, the Xtreme features numerous driver assist systems such as Forward Collision Mitigation, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Warning, a rear camera, and parking sensors. It also bests its predecessor’s paltry offering of two airbags with seven airbags - dual front airbags, side airbags, driver knee airbags, and curtain airbags. Side Impact Protection Bars in the doors add to the vehicle's impressive passive safety features which include ISOFIX child seat anchors.
Compared to the Xtreme version of its predecessor, the latest version’s braking performance has been improved thanks to the use of larger front discs and caliper pistons, whilst ride quality has also benefitted courtesy of larger rear dampers which contain more damping oil.
The Mitsubishi Triton Xtreme is priced at R639 995, and it is covered by the original Mitsubishi Motors' Manufacturer's Warranty of 3 years or 100 000km, a 5-year/ 90 000 km Service Plan and a 5-year/unlimited mileage Roadside Assistance. Service intervals are scheduled every 15 000 km or once a year.
