BMW X4M is a rapid road rocket for the family
Fast SUVs are all the rage these days. In fact many manufacturers are developing highly track focused SUV’s and turning their track cars into off-roaders. Yes, it sure is strange times that we live in. BMW is adamant that it invented the true Sports Utility Vehicle with the introduction of the X5. Now there's a BMW badged SUV for everyone. Their fast stuff is what excites us and the latest BMW X4M is highlight. We drove it and here are our thoughts.
One of the standout features of the BMW X4M is its engine. Under the hood, you'll find a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine that produces an impressive 375kW and 650Nm. This powerhouse is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that delivers lightning-fast shifts, allowing the X4M to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.1 seconds. It also sounds pretty spectacular. So it has the engine but what about the looks?
To complement its impressive performance, the BMW X4M features a sporty and aggressive design. The bold and muscular stance, combined with aerodynamic lines, gives the X4M a commanding presence on the road. The large air intakes in the front bumper not only contribute to the vehicle's athletic look but also enhance cooling for the high-performance engine. Additionally, the X4M features unique M-specific touches like quad exhaust tips, a rear diffuser, and larger wheels, further emphasising its sporty nature. The proverbial cherry on the cake is the colour of our test unit. It is called Sao Paulo Yellow and it sure does stand out.
Step inside the BMW X4M, and you'll find a driver-centric cockpit that exudes luxury and sophistication. The high-quality materials, including premium leather upholstery and carbon fibre trim, create an upscale atmosphere. The sport seats provide excellent support during spirited driving, while the intuitive layout of the controls ensures easy access to essential functions. BMW's iDrive infotainment system, displayed on a large touchscreen, offers seamless connectivity and access to various features, including navigation, entertainment, and vehicle settings.
In terms of technology and safety, the BMW X4M is packed with advanced features. The digital instrument cluster provides drivers with important information at a glance, and the head-up display keeps crucial details in the driver's line of sight. The X4M also comes equipped with an array of driver-assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring, to enhance safety and ease the demands of long journeys.
The BMW X4M strikes an excellent balance between performance and practicality. With its spacious interior and ample cargo capacity, it offers the versatility needed for everyday use. We found the 8-speed automatic to offer a more relaxed driving experience as it changes gears quickly and sometimes, when so desired without notice. In Comfort mode the X4M calms itself down substantially. The result is a car that just tootles along without fuss.
However, when you activate its hardcore M mode this machine becomes a fire breathing demon that will prowl the streets looking for a Porsche or Audi R8 to embarass. It’s in-gear acceleration is impressive and it gains speed incredibly quickly, you need to pay attention. Even though it is all-wheel drive it will still slide its rear when provoked, 650Nm is no joke when it is delivered so rapidly.
In conclusion, the BMW X4M delivers a thrilling driving experience while maintaining the practicality of an SUV. With its powerful engine, striking design, and cutting-edge technology, the X4M stands out as an exciting alternative within the performance SUV segment.
