Gorgeous, funky new manual BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse
BMW has revealed the Pure Impulse edition of its Z4 M40i roadster. This 2024 model is designed for enthusiasts of unadulterated driving pleasure and marks the first time the range-topping version comes with a six-speed manual gearbox.
At the core of the Pure Impulse edition is an equipment package designed to enhance the driving experience. It includes retuned chassis technology, mixed-size M light-alloy wheels (19 inches at the front, 20 inches at the rear), and exclusive design features for both the interior and exterior. This edition will be available in Germany, other European markets, and the USA, with new exterior paint finishes adding a fresh look to the BMW Z4 range. The only major question is, when is it coming to South Africa? Hopefully, sooner than later.
The BMW Z4 M40i has established itself as a purist's sports car, featuring a classic soft-top roof, two seats, and a free-revving six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, delivering power through the rear wheels. The addition of a manual gearbox enhances the driving experience, allowing for precise control over the 250 kW/340 hp engine.
This new edition is expected to bolster the Z4's standing as a global leader in the premium roadster segment. In Germany, nearly half of all Z4 customers have chosen the flagship version, with its unique straight-six engine setting it apart in a competitive field dominated by German premium brands. The BMW M model accounts for over 30% of the roadster's global sales volume.
The demand for the BMW Z4 is vital for its two model variants powered by efficient four-cylinder engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The entry-level Z4 sDrive20i and the higher-powered Z4 sDrive30i both offer fuel efficiency and performance, with optional transmission upgrades available.
The BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse edition continues a long tradition of BMW roadsters that blend sporty driving pleasure with racing success. This lineage dates back to the BMW 328 in 1936 and includes the BMW Z1 and Z3, as well as the first two generations of the Z4. The new edition's six-cylinder engine and six-speed manual gearbox offer a unique proposition in this segment, reminiscent of high-performance sports cars from BMW M GmbH.
The engine of the Z4 M40i boasts M TwinPower Turbo technology, ensuring free-revving performance, smooth power delivery, and a maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp. The six-speed manual gearbox has been developed explicitly for this model, ensuring swift, intuitive gear changes.
Chassis enhancements include variable sport steering, M Sport brakes, an M Sport differential, and adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers specially tuned for the PureImpulse edition. Mixed-size wheels, previously reserved for BMW M GmbH models, enable optimal power transfer and cornering capabilities.
The Pure Impulse edition also features exclusive exterior and interior design elements. Exterior additions include M High-gloss Shadowline trim with extended features, exclusive model badging, and red brake callipers. Interior appointments include M-specific design features and Vernasca leather trim in Cognac with black M piping.
New exterior colours are available for the four-cylinder Z4 models, including Frozen Deep Green metallic for top-range versions and Sanremo Green metallic for the sDrive20i and sDrive30i.
The BMW Z4 combines puristic driving pleasure with intuitive operation and state-of-the-art driver assistance systems. The BMW iDrive display and control system, BMW Live Cockpit Professional, and a range of driver assistance features ensure a safe, enjoyable, and connected driving experience.
The BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse edition is set to launch in March 2024; this aims to be an exhilarating open-top driving pleasure for purists.
