The BMW XM is set to make its debut at the upcoming 2022 BMW M Fest, with its market introduction in South Africa scheduled for the second quarter of 2023. This remarkable vehicle is a significant milestone for BMW M GmbH as it marks their first foray into the high-performance car segment with an electrified drive system. Combining a V8 petrol engine and a robust electric motor, the BMW XM offers an exhilarating driving experience (fuel consumption combined: 1.6 – 1.5 l/100 km in the WLTP cycle; electric power consumption combined: 30.1 – 28.9 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle; CO2 emissions combined: 36 – 33 g/km in the WLTP cycle).
The newly developed M HYBRID drive system, coupled with a striking design and a luxurious interior, redefines the concept of a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) in the high-performance segment. This innovation aims to introduce the renowned M experience to new audiences and markets in South Africa.
As a standout model in the brand's 50th-anniversary celebration, the BMW XM is also a nod to the heritage of BMW M, reminiscent of the iconic BMW M1. The vehicle's exterior design features finely crafted details that pay homage to the legendary mid-engined sports car. Production of the BMW XM will commence at the BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the USA in December 2022, and it will be available at dealerships globally in spring 2023. Key markets for this model will include the USA, China, and the Middle East.
The M HYBRID drive system delivers a total output of 480 kW, combining the power of the combustion engine (up to 360 kW) and the electric drive system (up to 145 kW). It features a newly developed, high-revving V8 engine with cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology. An electric motor integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission provides instantaneous power, resulting in a combined maximum torque of 800 Nm. When operating in ELECTRIC mode, the BMW XM can cruise with zero local emissions at speeds of up to 140 km/h and cover a maximum distance of 82 – 88 km* in the WLTP cycle, thanks to a lithium-ion high-voltage battery located in the underbody and a 25.7 kWh usable energy capacity. The BMW IconicSounds Electric, created in collaboration with film score composer Hans Zimmer, enhances the electric driving experience with its unique sound profile.
The M xDrive all-wheel-drive system channels power to the road, offering impressive performance and cruising capabilities. Drivers can choose from three operating modes, including an ELECTRIC mode for emission-free driving. The BMW XM LABEL RED, expected in Spring 2023, boasts even more power, with a system output of 550 kW and a maximum system torque of 1,000 Nm, making it the most powerful road-legal car ever produced by BMW M GmbH.
