BMW 2 Series 220d could be the ideal compact coupe

The BMW 2 Series is one of, if not the most popular compact coupe on our roads. The current model has brought about a new design language which is a bit of a departure from the sleek design of the previous model. This, the latest model has a more opinionated design which sparks debate. While not to everyone's tastes, we quite like it. We also like the 2.0-litre diesel engine under the bonnet of this test unit and here's why.

Ok so you might be looking at this 2 Series and wondering why it looks nothing like the four-door 2 Series coupe which looks more like a 1 Series. Well, the story goes that this 2 door coupe has nothing in common with the 1 Series or 2 Series GranCoupe. This 2 Series coupe is actually based on a 3 Series chassis and, as a result, remains rear-wheel-drive, except for the M240i which features xDrive all-wheel drive. It’s confusing but what can you do…

So this new chassis benefits the vehicle's wheelbase which is now longer. It also features a wider stance but with a lower height that has given it a sleek, low-slung look. Like many BMW models of late, they tend to look a whole lot better in the metal than they do on the internet. While this 2 Series might look a bit strange in pictures it actually looks good in person.

We particularly like the aggressive and sporty front bumper, new LED headlights and the power bulge on the bonnet. Like with the latest 4 Series GranCoupe, the doorhandles are now flush with the body which adds a clean, undisrupted side profile design.

The rear of the car also looks eye-catching thanks to unique taillights and a sporty lower bumper. The diesel model seen here benefits from a tailpipe at each end of the bumper while the M240i makes do with extra sporty attire and large tailpipes.

Step inside the new BMW 2 Series and, if you know a thing or two about new BMW’s you will realise that the interior looks very similar, to many other BMW models currently on offer. What this does is make the transition from model to model easier.

Drivers and passengers will know where everything is, making it easy to adjust to the environment. In terms of quality, the BMW 2 Series offers loads of it. The blend of fine materials and technology is admirable. The large infotainment screen houses all the vehicle controls as well as smartphone integration which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system is easy to use despite the various menus on offer. It can be controlled via the iDrive dial or with touch inputs.

Furthermore, the digital instrument cluster offers relevant driver information and even changes depending on what driving mode you are in. Unfortunately it cannot be changed which is a pity as the overall design of the graphics is not as visually appealing as that offered by Mercedes for example. One nice feature which we enjoyed is the ambient lighting M Performance design on the doors just behind the door handle, it’s a neat little touch.

Because the car is now bigger than before, rear occupants won't be as cramped and the boot is pretty decent as well so you won't have to skimp on practicality either. Overall the interior is spacious, packed with technology, quality materials and it remains visually appealing.

Under the bonnet of our test unit is BMW's tried and tested 2.0-litre turbo diesel motor. This motor develops 140kW and 400Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. This model however feels best suited for the long road. It is light on fuel and the motor doesn't seem bothered by hills and mountain passes. The 220i on the other hand demands to be thrashed, one needs to step on it to fully exploit its performance credentials and in doing so, you get to exploit its superb chassis. The 220d, while equally as good through the corners, seems best suited for a more relaxed driving experience.

Overall the new 2 Series is a brilliant car. It offers a sporty design, a relatively sporty driving experience and a wide range of engines. Up in Gauteng we would opt for this 220d model, however if we operated out of Cape Town, the 220i would be our choice and if we won the lottery, the M240i would be on our driveway.
